Curatorial Projects: Art & Science

Role: Curator, Creative Director, Contributing Artist, Event Organiser, MC

Illuminating Science Exhibition

In 2015 I curated the Illuminating Science Exhibition at the Lovett Gallery, Newcastle Region Library. The opening night was launched by Editor in Chief of the Australian Geographic Magazine, Chrissie Goldrick.

In addition I organised weekly public workshops from November to January, so participating artists could share their skills with the local community.

Natural History Illustration Student Exhibitions

As Program Convenor for Natural History Illustration Honours I co-ordinated and co-curated, with my colleague Andrew Howells, numerous exhibitions.

These were held at the Newcastle Museum, Watt Space Gallery and Lovett Gallery.

Online Exhibitions: Biomes Virtual Gallery

My Role: Curator and Creative Director

In 2020 I collaborated with Ecologist, Dr. Alex Callen, Pyschologist, Dr. Michelle Kelly, UX Desigenr Dr. Simone O’Callaghan and the Conservation Science Research Group to create an interactive exhibition called Biomes. Our group, known as STREAM - Community of Knowledge Exchange, uses art to help communicate scientific concepts. The goal of Biomes was to bring the University, Community and Industry together to discuss issues around biodiversity loss, conservation measures and eco-anxiety. Due to Covid restrictions we created, in a very short time, a virtual gallery to house our exhibition.

International Exhibition: Partnering with Ars Electronica

In partnership with colleague Dr. Kristefan Minski, Biomes was featured as the Novocastrian Ecosystem, one of the Virtual Gardens in Austrian based, Ars Electronica’s ‘In Kepler’s Gardens’ 2020 Festival. Biomes included informative and educational videos, soundscapes from nature, artworks, digital creative works, 3D models, and interactive exhibits. The virtual gallery contained 5 rooms, housing the work of 23 contributing artists.

Featured on ABC Radio National Science Show

After a very successful online opening night, we had over 1800 individual visitors to the Biomes Virtual Gallery. During

'Science Week’ Dr. Callen and I were interviewed on the ABC Radio National Science Show by Robin Williams.
